Friday 30th July: Live music from The Madding Crowd Devon indie-folk band The Madding Crowd will play at our regular Friday night bar on 30th July. Formed in 1996, the band has played at festivals and in venues around the West Country. They mainly use their voices, strings and sticks (and a few boxes joined with electrical spaghetti known as "gear") to create what has been described as indie-folk and acoustic-pop.
Saturday 7th August at 8.00 p.m. - Guy Buttery
Acoustic guitarist Guy Buttery's latest album Fox Hill Lane won the 2010 "Best Instrumental Record of the Year" at the South Africa Music Award's, the most prestigious event in the South African music calendar. Local and international press reviews have offered nothing but glowing reports on both the musicality and production of all 14 tracks. Each of these reflect a very intimate portrayal of Guy’s personal and musical journey since his previous album Songs from the Cane Fields. Since the release of Fox Hill Lane Guy has been invited to collaborate, perform and record on a world music project in Mauritius with acclaimed artists Eric Triton and Alhousseini (from Niger’s Etran Finatawa). He has also represented South Africa at Toulouse’s Rio Loco festival in France this year before heading back to Europe for another fully fledged tour, which includes The Old Chapel in Calstock on 7th August. There are some reviews of Guy’s music below. See also www.guybuttery.co.za and www.myspace.com/guybuttery for pictures, a full biography and more. NOTE Please be aware that there is an open air music event in Calstock on the same weekend as this event, with the possibility of some noise drifting up to the chapel. For this reason, we have now made this a free concert (ticket prices were originally £6 in advance, £8 on the door). So, if you’d like to come to a free gig by an amazing guitarist in a fantastic venue, but with the possibility of some extraneous noise, then come and join us. You can obtain your free tickets before the event by collecting them from Levine’s in Calstock, or reserve them by contacting us on 01822 834465 or info@calstockarts.org.uk. You can also collect them on the door - our Gallery Bar will be open at 7.00 p.m., the concert will start at 8.00 p.m. “Unorthodox twenty-something Guy Buttery throws down the gauntlet with an album of incredible versatility and imagination. There are times when it sounds as if there’s a seven-piece band backing Guy Buttery, so complex and rich is the sound, but it’s just him and his acoustic guitar exploring myriad textures and rhythms with an ingenious imagination and scant regard for music industry rules. It’s the kind of album that reveals something new at every turn, the kind of album that never gets old or outstays its welcome.” - JHBLive "Guy Buttery's latest album is a true accomplishment. Layers of musical landscapes are woven together to harness the listener, note by note. Fox Hill Lane is a timeless record and of the best stuff to ever come out of South Africa."- Acoustic Image Starting Saturday 8th August - Tea with Turner
Calstock Arts will host an exhibition about the artist JMW Turner and how he was inspired by the beauty of the Tamar Valley. The exhibition will be open along with the Chapel Cafe on Sundays in August (starting on the 8th) and throughout September. Join us for tea, coffee and cake between 2.00 and 5.00 p.m.
Friday 27th August Spanish and flamenco guitarist Mark Barnwell returns to play at our regular Friday Night Bar on 27th August. Entrance is free and Mark will play from around 8.30 p.m. Plus, there'll be antipasti for you to enjoy with your drink in our Gallery Bar.
Saturday 4th September at 7.45 p.m. - Cocktails, Canapes and Cabaret with MusicDeco In 1979 a trio of musicians premiered at the Wigmore Hall in London with their new ensemble, Music Deco. They delighted audiences with music from the Deco period, both classical and popular, and went on to enjoy huge success on tour. Much of the music was arranged or written for them in the style of the period. The new Music Deco consists of one of the founder members, saxophonist and clarinetist, Chris Gradwell, along with two new members, singer Kate Walker and pianist Andrew Daldorph. Their performance at The Old Chapel will focus on the popular style of songs and melodies from the Deco period, featuring, amongst others, melodies and songs from Bix Beiderbecke, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin along with a compelling, musical setting of Dorothy Parker’s witty and cynical prose piece, “The Waltz”, written for the original MusicDeco Trio. We are delighted to welcome Kate Walker again to The Old Chapel, following her highly successful ‘Sweet to Remember’ revue in March. Tickets are £10 in advance, available from Levine’s in Calstock or can be reserved by contacting info@calstockarts.org.uk / 01822 834465. Tickets are £11 on the door, £5 for under 21s. The Gallery Bar will open at 7.00 p.m. Sunday 10th October - Squashbox Theatre presents 'Universerama!'
